Behind-the-ear (BTE) is the most common and traditional type of hearing aids. All of the parts including the microphone, receiver, and other chips are contained in the hearing aid body which is placed over the top of the patient’s ear and rests behind the ear.
Custom hearing aids may be in the form of In-the-Ear (ITE), In-the-Canal (ITC), Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) or the newest Invisible-in-the-Canal (IIC). Aside from the degree of hearing loss, one’s comfort is also taken into consideration when prescribing a hearing aid.
RIC devices are mostly preferred for comfort & power. It uses a thin tube called “micro tube” that is connected from the body of the hearing aid and extends into the ear canal where the receiver is located. This micro tube serves as the “passageway” of sound from the device to the ear.
